Recommended Methods

Ranked by effectiveness for current conditions. Check local regulations โ€” some reaches have gear restrictions.

โ–ธ Primary Method
Nymphing
The bread and butter on the Grand. Dead-drift subsurface flies through seams and feeding lanes.
Best at: 8โ€“14ยฐC water, 8โ€“12 mยณ/sFish: Head of runs, tailoutsLeader: 9โ€“12 ft ยท 4xโ€“5x tippet
Artificial only in many reaches
โ–ธ Secondary Method
Streamer Fishing
Swing or strip through deeper pools and undercut banks. Browns respond aggressively in low light.
Best at: Overcast sky, rising flowFish: Deep pools, undercut banksLeader: 9 ft ยท 2xโ€“3x
Artificial only in many reaches
โ–ธ Worth Trying
Dry Fly
Summer hatches on the Grand can be spectacular. Watch the surface โ€” if fish are rising, switch.
Best at: Overcast, 10โ€“16ยฐC waterWatch for: Surface rises, hatchesLeader: 12โ€“15 ft ยท 5xโ€“6x
Artificial only in many reaches

Flies, Lures & Baits

What to have in your box. Live bait prohibited in many Grand River sections โ€” verify OMNR regulations for your reach.

Tungsten Bead Caddis
#12โ€“16 ยท Olive / Brown
Heavy bead gets to the bottom fast in higher flows.
4

Zebra Midge
#18โ€“22 ยท Black/silver or red/silver

1
Woolly Bugger
#4โ€“8 ยท Olive, Black, Brown
Grand River standard. Olive in normal conditions, black in stained.
2
Sculpin Pattern
#4โ€“6 ยท Tan / Brown, weighted

#4โ€“8 ยท Chartreuse/White or Olive/White
Excellent in slightly elevated or stained water.
4

Evening staple. Caddis hatches reliable Mayโ€“September.
2
Parachute Adams
#14โ€“18 ยท Grey
All-purpose dry when you see rises but can't ID the hatch.
3
Sulphur Comparadun
#14โ€“16 ยท Yellow / Orange

4
Mepps Aglia Spinner
#3โ€“4 ยท Black/Yellow, Natural
Classic trout spinner. Consistent in all flows through seams.
1
Roe Bag
Small mesh sacs ยท Natural or cured
The most effective float fishing bait in Ontario rivers. Match size to flow โ€” smaller in low clear water, larger in high stained water.
2

More durable than soft beads. Thread on line and peg 1โ€“2 inches above hook โ€” do not attach directly. Chartreuse and orange are top producers.
4
Plastic Worm
3โ€“4 inch ยท Red, Pink, Chartreuse
Year-round producer. Thread onto a single hook and drift naturally. Red and pink for stained water, natural for clear. Good fallback when fish have seen a lot of roe.
5
Nightcrawler
Full or half ยท Natural
Classic bait for all trout species. Thread onto hook leaving a tail to wiggle. Best in spring and after rain when naturals are washing in. Good fallback when fish ignore roe.
Bait rules vary by river โ€” always verify current OMNR regulations before fishing.
